1859 broadside headlined "PORTUGUESE CONGREGATION MICKVEH ISRAEL OF PHILADELPHIA… SYNAGOGUE CHAMBERS DEC. 25, 1859." Resolution passed by the congregation "…in view of the appeals from our Jewish Brethren for aid to alleviate the distresses of those who fled from the brutality of the lawless Moorish Kabyles, to seek protection at Gibraltar…" Money appropriated and a committee appointed to take the necessary steps to collect those funds "…to relieve the appalling destitution of the refugees from Morocco now sheltered at Gibraltar" with list of contributors then participating. A SECOND SHEET (also blank on reverse) with resolution of the Board of British Jews about that same matter as well as "EXTRACTS FROM LETTERS RECEIVED FROM GIBRALTAR" which detail much of the atrocities actually having taken place in Morocco to Jewish families, their current plight and their escape to Gibraltar. Pale blue paper. Just normal aging, but exc. +. (Singerman No. 1594). Rare, and significant American Judaica.
