On official printed letterhead "OFFICE OF THE MAYOR / CITY OF PHILA" with city seal. Neatly penned letter entirely in his hand with full signature "Alexander Henry" to David H. Solis. Apologizes for delayed answer and acknowledges receipt of a hundred dollar check from Solis: "…I do not know how your contribution can be made available directly for the defence of the city as there is no fund for such purpose…if you desire that this shall be handed to the Fund for the Relief of the families of volunteers be kind enough to let me hear from you to that effect…" Single sheet both sides. Exc. +. Page 3 is a copy, in a clerk's handwriting, the short note received September 23, 1861 by Solis in reply to the Mayor requesting that the check be used "…in any way you may deem most beneficial." Exc.
