HEBREW UNION VETERANS ASSOCIATION cast in relief on this rare three piece bronze medal as worn by Jewish veterans of the Civil War who formed the very first American Jewish war veterans organization in the United States. 4 inches overall. Heavyweight; bronze. Top piece American eagle over bar with relief "COMRADE"; chain linked to center bar with relief "1861-1865." Large bottom medal with central design of tall, slender monument with eagle at top and dates at base "1861-1865"; at bottom scroll panel "N.Y." (believed where organization first formed). Deep, rich patina. Very well made. Only one other specimen of these has ever been viewed in collections. Fine and very rare.
