Pamphlet; in German language (few Hebrew words): "STATUTEN DER GEMEINDE [Hebrew words for name of congregation 'Oheb Shalom'] OBER FRIEDEN-LIEBE IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY…[FORMED] TO SEPTEMBER 1860"…published New York by J. Muhlhauser, 195 Division Street, 1861. 19 pages. Aging. Some tiny nicks and chipping along extreme edges of the lower blank margins. Light tan original paper covers intact, showing wear with front cover having many penciled numbers and figures. Very rare. Unlisted in Singerman, may be the only recorded copy. 1860 WAS THE VERY YEAR THAT TEMPLE WAS FORMED, the result of factional disputes and a rebellion against congregation B'nai Jeshurun the first Jewish congregation that had been formed only two years earlier in Newark. Many years later Woodrow Wilson, when gov. of N.J. in 1911 delivered the principal address at the dedication of Oheb Shalom's synagogue on High St.
