"ST. LOUIS MAY 30, 1864" datelined single sheet (blank reverse) neatly and boldly penned letter in the hand of and fully signed by Henry Auerbach, Secretary of the Congregation to Isaac Leeser: "The United Hebrew Congregation of this city, having a petition as candidate for Rabbi and Preacher of our congregation from the Rev. Dr. Henry Vidaver, formerly Rabbi and Preacher of Cong. Rodolph Chalom of your city refers among other testimonials to yourself regarding his qualifications and character. Though he may differ with you in some theological points, [our] congregation here beg of you that you may give us…your opinion as to [his] abilities, qualifications and character." Light aging, but exc. +. Vidaver did get the position, leading the St. Louis community from that year until the 1870's where he went on to make a name for himself leading the 34'th Street Synagogue in New York City until the 1870's when he again changed and went to congregation in San Francisco. Considerable about him is read and works on Judaism in Philadelphia and "A Century of Judaism in New York" (Goldstein 1930). Exc.
