MONTEFIORE, Moses (1784-1885) Retired stockbroker, who from 1829 until his death was prominent in the struggle for Jewish equality. He was knighted in 1837, and became a baronet in 1846. Letter Signed, “Moses Montefiore” 1p. quarto, London, March 1877, reads in part “I have the pleasure of handing you enclosed my cheque for L3 being the amount of my subscription to the Jewish Chronicle for the years 1875, 76 & 77...With sincere wishes that the approaching Festival may bring you and your family, as well as to every member in your community, joy & prosperity...” About VG.
