HENRIETTA SZOLD (1860-1945) a founder of Hadassah, ardent Zionist and among the most eminent Jewish women of her era. Single page letter (blank reverse) entirely penned in her tiny (neat and easily read) hand with full autograph signature. On printed letterhead; "THE JEWISH PUBLICATION SOCIETY OF AMERICA…PHILA." To prominent American jurist Mayer Sulzberger of Philadelphia, March 4, 1903. Then editing a famous work about to be published, she writes: "Practically all the text of the Maimonides book arrived and Mr. Abrahams promises the illustrations shortly…[with details of how book was to be printed] the same style as the Dubnow book. …Members of the Committee did not express dissatisfaction with Dubnow [but] I do not myself like its appearance…spoke to the printer [and he explains that] the work is due to the modern type face." Szold mentions sending samples of other styles of type and suggestions for altering; book would have to be larger than projected "…and requiring an index." Seeks Sulzberger's preference. Exc. +.
