Newspaper, SOUTH CAROLINA GAZETTE, 4 pages, folio, March 6, 1784, Charleston, South Carolina. The Revolutionary War had been officially over for scarcely three months when this paper hit the streets of Charleston. The masthead carries South Carolina's famous palmetto State Seal and the lesser known verso of the same featuring Spes, the Roman personification of Hope. News stories include the description of a naval duel off Martinique between the British and French and a proposal in Parliament to facilitate "...carrying on trade and commerce between the subjects of His Majesty's dominions and the inhabitants of the said united States." Given the newspaper's date and location, there are many references to slavery within. For example, sales notices are given for: "...a valuable NEGRO FELLOW, a good Field Slave..." and "...Forty-five Prime SLAVES...consisting of sawyers, house carpenters, field slaves and a fellow who understands well the coasting business..". Another advertisement offers the services of "...A Negro Wench, young and healthy, with a good breast of milk...". Some staining as to be expected, else Fine condition...Plus; Newspaper, NEW YORK TRIBUNE, 8 pages, folio, March 23, 1861, New York City. South Carolina figures prominently in this newspaper published some three weeks before the bombardment of Fort Sumter. A bold headline vows that (Fort) PICKENS NOT TO BE ABANDONED while another warns of the DANGER OF A COLLISION. Military preparations are discussed at length in the various stories presented here. Stains and folds as expected, else Fine condition.
