Lot of 3 early newspapers printed in the young American republic. Newspaper, GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES, 4 pages, folio, July 17, 1790, New York City. Hard news items and public announcements take up every inch of column space in this particular paper. Its readers surely had a keen interest in the workings of government for Congressional debates are described at length along with transcriptions of bills proposed and enacted. One Act published published here is for "...establishing the temporary and permanent seat of the government of the United States." It further states that "...a district of territory, not exceeding ten miles square, to be located as hereafter directed on the river Potowmack...". Small stains and one fold, else VG condition...Plus; Newspaper, GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES, 4 pages, folio, December 11, 1790, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Being devoted to timely the reporting of government activities in an age of primitive communication, The Gazette moved with Congress from New York to Philadelphia on October 13, 1790. The lead for this issue is a transcription of George Washington's Second Annual Address to Congress which was made on December 8, 1790. The President spoke on Kentucky's bid for statehood, finances, European unrest, and Indian troubles in the Northwest Territories. Other news includes a lengthy report on the French Revolution then in progress. Somes stains, else Very Good condition...Plus; Newspaper, THE NEW YORK JOURNAL & PATRIOTIC REGISTER, 4 pages, folio, January 21, 1792, New York City. This general interest newspaper contains news, a Congressional report from Philadelphia, and plenty of advertising. Among the classifieds is one from New Jersey offering $10 for the apprehension of "...a Negro Man, named JACOB...He is a a smart active fellow, and plays on the fiddle...". Where would a Northern slave run to? Overall Very Good condition.
