Archive of nine letters, 14 pp. total, all octavo, 1792-1797, from businessmen in Wilmington, North Carolina (8 letters) and Norfolk, Virginia (one letter) to Moses Brown, Newburyport, Rhode Island. Brown (1742-1827) was a prominent merchant deriving his wealth primarily from the importation of molasses and sugar into New England. His network of associates spread from Europe to the West Indies and up along the Eastern Seaboard. The earliest of these letters is written aboard the brig "Mary" at Wilmington and Brown is informed by Captain Henry Lunt that "I have on board 132 barrels of pitch & 211 bal's of tar & have on the Warf 320 Barrels of tar & 50 Barrels of turpentine." North Carolina was well-known for exporting pine products such as these during the 18th and 19th centuries. The other letters are also business related and likewise deal with commodities, pricing and shipping. Correspondents include Ward & Langdon, Samuel Chandless, Spaulding & Deans and Moses Myers. All letters shows expected aging and light stains, else VG.
