Autograph Letter Signed, William B. Whiting, 1 1/2 pages, quarto, May 30, 1845, Lansingburgh, New York to Dr. A. Brigham, Superintendent of the New York State Lunatic Asylum, Utica, New York. It reads in part: "I arrived here yesterday having been recently detached from the U.S. Frigate Macedonian in which I have lately arrived from the Coast of Africa where I have been for the last two years. I learned that it was necessary to make some immediate arrangements to insure the continuance of my sister Elizabeth Q. Whiting at the Asylum under your charge in Utica as the term for which she is now there as a County patient will expire in a few days. It is my wish, as it is that of my Father & Mother, that she should be continued there if possible...If the present bond is not considered satisfactory you will oblige me by returning it and any suggestions, instruction or information you may be disposed to give...". The letter's address panel carries a Landsburgh postmark and PAID stamp. One small area of paper loss from opening, else Fine condition.
