Newspaper, THE NATIONAL POLICE GAZETTE, Vol. I, Nos. 32-37, 47 pages, folio, April 18, 1846 - May 23, 1846, New York City. Many Americans of the mid-19th century sought lurid entertainment in the pages of the National Police Gazette as it explored mankind's baser instincts. The cover of each issue carries a woodcut of a criminal or scene related to the lead story. Among those featured in this collection are: "Bill Eddy, the Thief", "Thomas Learning the Burglar's Art in the Frankfort Penitentiary", and "Dick Collard's 'Pal', Ned Arnold, the Pickpocket and Burglar". The second and subsequent issues were printed after the outbreak of war with Mexico and carry a "List and Description of Deserters from the United States Army" on the last page. The Army offers as $30 reward for each deserter aprehended. Soling and aging as expected, else VG condition.
