June 4, 1856, Letter Remarking about Spiritual Matters before the War, Newburyport, Very Fine. 8.25" x 5", four pages, Choice Very Fine. Writing to his brother and sister about the spiritual state of the nation, which was being drawn towards war, this Northern respondent declares, in part, "...Blame belongs to the nation so blest--so prosperous, so ungrateful, & regardless of Divine ... precepts--chastisement is our desert--& may reduce rank pride, & self-reliance..." Archival repairs to folds are practically invisible. Includes original, postmarked envelope, addressed to "Henry B. Pearson, Esq." of Skowhegan, Maine.
