Autograph Letter Signed, “H.T. Hemmingway” 3p. quarto, November 30, 1859, Bark Adiline C. Adams at Sea, addressed to Samuel G. Adams and Co. and reads in part: “...It is my painful duty to inform you and the friends of my late mate Mr. Nathl. H. Cobb of his being most sad and cruelly murdered on board Bark Adeline C. Adams on her passage from Boston to Rio de Janiro...everything had gone along quietly no disturbances of any kind...I was awoke in my bed and in the act of getting up when I heard some indistinct words and quick steps on the quarter deck. I jumped out of bed and looked out of windows saw a man’s arm with knife in hand. I started for the deck and met Mr Cobb coming ino cabin with the blood streaming from his neck said he believed his jugular vein was cut...we immediately tried to stop the blood, he fainted...He breathed his last at 5 minutes past 8 a.m....The man who committed the murder shipped in Boston by the name of Abraham Trask, but says his right name is Herman Wardman age 22 and belongs to Breemen...I called the murder aft put him in irons and put him in the cabin and seated him with the rest around the dying man to witness the death he had caused...At 9 a.m. we washed and laid out the corpse in good clean clothes and at sunset buried him in the sea in the most solemn and respectful manner...” More on the cause of the murder and the captains reflection on the subject.
