Archive of five manuscript documents and letters, approximately 10 pages, mostly quarto, pertaining to the creative accounting practices performed in 1866 by a Mr. George S. Mandeville during his management of three Louisiana plantations known as "Scotland", "St. Genevieve", and "Fish Pond". One Whitlow Reid writes from Scotland Plantation on December 10, 1866 to Major General Francis Jay Herron as follows: "I enclose memorandum of charges against Mr. Geo. S. Mandeville. They embrace but a small portion of the charges that might be justly as well as legally established against that person. As in my purchase of an interest in the leases of these plantations, $ subsequent management of them, I had no knowledge of Mr. Mandeville, save as your temporary Agent, it is proper to add that I could not now consent to have anything to do with the prosecution of your claims against him. With my knowledge of his character, as gained from what I see of his operations here, I could not submit to the necessity of holding any intercourse of any sort whatsoever with him....". VG condition...Plus; Leather wallet, 4" x 8 1/2", ca. 1860's. This compartmentalized wallet is embossed with three horses' heads on the inside flap and was used to carry the papers.
