Massive archive pertaining to the family, friends, and colleagues of celebrated German Egyptologist Heinrich Brugsch (1827-1894). Approximately 300 signed letters, calling cards, notes, and postcards span the century between the 1870's and 1970's. The material, mostly in untranslated German, is an even mix of manuscript and typed communications representing the flower of German intellectual society before the Nazi takeover. Correspondents include professors, royalty, writers, poets, and composers. Many of the early letters are to Dr. Otto Arendt, a vocal champion of silver-based currency versus the gold standard. The more recent letters, some in English, are largely to Dr. Heinrich Brugsch, son and namesake of the 19th century Egyptologist. The younger Dr. Brugsch, a physician, was helped by American colleagues to emigrate from Germany to the United States during the 1930's. He settled in Massachusetts where he enjoyed a long and distinguished career. Among his papers is a Typed Letter Signed "H.C. Lodge", one page, quarto, July 15, 1942, Washington, D.C. to Brugsch in Boston. On U.S. Senate stationery Henry Cabot Lodge writes as regards the possibility of Brugsch's chances for citizenship: "I am pleased to be advised by the Assistant District Director, Immigration and Naturalization Service, that you have been granted opportunity to appear at that office in order to file your petition." A few other items in the archive are as follows: Signed cabinet card portrait of writer Walter Bloem, ca. 1890's, Germany...Plus; Signed cabinet card photograph of anthropologist Ernst Haekel, ca. 1890, Germany. An unusual image showing a sculpted relief of Haekel...Plus; Two stamped envelopes bearing Bismark's name, 1880's...Plus; Four books of German poetry, 20th century, including two by Robert Ulrich, anti-Nazi Harvard professor...Plus; Over 100 mimeographed pages of Ulrich's poetry, perhaps unpublished...Plus; Over 100 pages of library print-outs cataloging this archive by correspondent. Overall Fine-VF condition.
