Photograph, BRIDGER CANYON NEAR FT. ELLIS by William H. Jackson, 16" x 20", ca. 1870's, Montana. The landscape shown here was taken during Ferdinand Hayden's western expedition for the U.S. Geological Survey. The photographer, William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), was a Union veteran who chronicled the Old West through the lens, with watercolors, and on canvas. His early work, made in the company of miners, railroad men, and geologists, remains a rich visual record of the frontier. He would come to have studios in Omaha and Denver. This splendid image retains its period mount and has the appearance of a giant carte de visite. Some chipping to edges, else Fine condition.
