Albumen photograph, 11-1/2”x15”, by William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), American photographer, Manitou, Colorado.Marked "248" in the plate and signed in type, "Jackson, Photo - DENVER" on matte. In the original period frame decorated with gold and silver designs. William Henry Jackson was the first photographer to reach Yellowstone National Park. He was in charge of the Hayden Survey from 1870 to 1879 and opened a photography studio in Denver in the latter year. He then began work for the Denver and Rio Grande Rail Road. Manitou, Colorado is nestled between the Garden of the Gods and America's most famous mountain, which can be seen in this photograph, Pike's Peak. Manitou is the native American word for Spirit.
