DALLAS, Alexander J. (1757-1817). Patriot, Secretary of the Treasury, 1814-1817. Autograph Letter Signed "A.J. Dallas", one page, octavo, January 13, 1812, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Commodore Rogers of the Frigate "President", Newport, Rhode Island. Alexander Dallas's son carried his father's full name and pursued a distinguished naval career for many years. The elder Dallas writes to his son's superior officer in part: "...I venture to beg the favor of you, to give him a furlough to visit us, provided you can conveniently do it...It has been said, that you were yourself to come this way. I hope you will, in the course of your journey, let us have the opportunity of appeasing you, personally...". Dark toning, one small archival tape repair to left edge. Overall VG condition.
