CLAY, Clement Comer (1789-1866). Born in Virginia and a kinsman of Henry Clay's, Clement Clay settled in Alabama before statehood and served on its Territorial Council, 1817-1818. He would later represent Alabama in both Houses of Congress. Autograph Letter Signed "CC Clay", one page, quarto, May 9, 1838, Washington D.C. to John G. Latting of Middlebury, Vermont. Clay writes in part: "...I have had the honor to receive yours of the 3rd inst, requesting a copy of my speech on the bill "to prevent the spread and circulation of the old notes of the U.S. Bank"...If I can lay my hands on one of those papers, containing it, I will send it to you." The letter folds into an envelope and is free franked "CC Clay". Nearly VF condition...Plus; Clipped Signature "CC Clay", 1 1/4" x 2". Stains, else VF.
