Autograph Letter Signed "J.Davis", 4 pages, quarto, July 20, 1840, Washington, D.C. In 1840 there were several politicians in Washington who could have signed signed this letter. The future Confederate President was not among them. In any event, the letter reads in small part as follows:"...I have rec'd your hoping and friendly invitation to meet the Whigs at Erie in Pennsylvania on the third of August next. If by doing so, i could stimulate them to better service in the great cause of reform and public liberty, I should deem the effort worth an sacrifice, for our free institutions are to be preserved only at the price of unceasing vigilance and activity - The stealthy tread of enroachment is always firm and onward...The veto power has crushed the independence of Congress and bowed the two houses down to the feet of the president...".
