WOODBURY, Levi (1789-1851) Justice of New Hampshire state supreme court, 1816-23; Governor of New Hampshire, 1823-24; member of New Hampshire state house of representatives, 1825; Speaker of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, 1825; U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, 1825-31, 1841-45; U.S. Secretary of the Navy, 1831-34; U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, 1834-41; Justice of U.S. Supreme Court, 1845-51; died in office 1851; candidate for Democratic nomination for President, 1848. Autograph Letter Signed, “Levi Woodbury” as Secretary of the Treasury, October 14, 1840, Washington, with franked integral leaf addressed to Allen Latham of Ohio, marked “Private and Confidential” it reads in part: “...Allow me to suggest the importance of a thorough organization and attendance at the Pols in November, by all our Democratic friends. Almost every apparent success by our opponents during the present year, has arisen from their superior attention to those points. In that way their vote has become larger while ours has remained much as before or has been increased in a less degree. ...At the last Presidential election we had neither Delaware, Maryland, Georgia nor eve Ohio. The result depends wholly on ourselves. Every state should look exclusively to itself and not be discouraged by results elsewhere..The great and desicive battle is yet to be fought. Its issue will often depend on different points and if unpromising in some other states the greater is the necessity of exertion in yours, and the more will be the glory...We have just heard from Philadelphia that Naylorisan has been signally rebuked by the People and Ingersoll elected by 1500 to 2000 majority...” Fine.
