CLAY, Henry (1777 - 1852) American politician, the "Great Pacificator" who supported the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 which sought to avoid a civil war on the issue of states' rights and slavery. Autograph Document Signed, “H. Clay” 1p. 7-1/2”x2-1/2”, Washington, February 1848, addressed to Miss. H.M. Chapman, and reads “As I have the happiness to enjoy the friendship of many of your relation, I take great pleasure in presenting my warm regards to you and to express the ardent hope that you may long live in health and happiness, and enjoy every blessing...” Toned at edges, else VG.
