BLAINE, James G. (1830-1893) One of the founding members of the Republican Party. Served in the House of Represenatives from 1863-1876. Speaker of the House 1869-1875. Served the U.S. Senate from 1876-1881. He lost the 1880 presidential nomination to Garfield, whom he served as secretary of state in 1881. Blaine stayed in Washington to write Twenty Years of Congress. The Republican presidential candidate in 1884, he lost to Grover Cleveland. Choosing not to run in 1888, he became President Benjamin Harrison's secretary of state (1889--92). Autograph Letter Signed, “J.G. Blaine” November 25, 1865, addressed to L.T. Sanbosky, in part: “...Please find enclosed certified check on Augusta Bank for $252.10 amt of Income Tax...I am now goingto ask as a final favor that you not present this check till Dec.15 - as I drew it against coupons maturing...The delay will not make much difference to ‘Uncle Sam’...” Fine...plus; BURCHARD, Samuel D. (1812-?) Clergymen who, in the campaign of 1884, called the Democrats the party of ‘rum, Romanism and rebellion’ in James Blaine’s presence. Blaine failed to correct Burchard, and it cost him the Irish vote and the election. Autograph Letter Signed, “S.D. Burchard”, 1p. quarto, New York , February 21, 1863, addressed to Thomas Acton and reads in part: “...I take pleasure in introducing to your favorable attention the bearer Mr. Tho. D. Mildeberger, who seeks from your honorable Board an appointment on the police...” VG. (2 items)
