COLFAX, Schuyler. (1823-1885) Vice President under Grant 1869-73, Representative from Indiana, Speaker of the House 1863-69, Whig activist and founder of Indiana's Republican Party. Colfax was implicated in the Credit Mobilier scandal and was ruined politically despite being completely exonerated. Colfax was the first officer to preside over both houses of Congress. Autograph Letter Signed, “Schuyler Colfax” addressed to Hon. E.D. Helder, 1p. octavo, September 28, 1874, Denver, Colorado, and reads: “We start home tomorrow after a delightful visite here of nearly ten months. But, amid the packing up, I must not omit to thank you for your very welcome letters, the last of which...I have not formally acknowledged. I suppose you are up to your eyes with causes, & find that the Southern outrages have helped to rectify our political lines...” VG.
