LAMB, John (1735-1800) American artillery commander in the American Revolution and later a prominent Anti-Federalist. Born in New York, Lamb was the son of a convicted burglar who was transported to the colonies in the 1720s. A leading member of the Sons of Liberty, Lamb served as a captain of artillery under Montgomery and Arnold before Quebec and was captured and imprisoned there. Following his parole he continued as an artillery officer rising to become colonel of the 2nd Continental Artillery and commanded the same at West Point in 1779 and 1780. He was brevetted brigadier general in 1783. In 1784 he became Collector of the Port of New York and served in the post before being dismissed by President John Adams in 1797. During the debates over ratification of the Constitution, he was a prominent voice against it, corresponding with the likes of Richard Henry Lee and Patrick Henry. Autograph Endorsement Signed, "John Lamb" as Collector of the Port of New York, on a manuscript Document Signed, 1p. legal folio, (331x200 mm.), New York, 18 Nov. 1785, being an account between the State of New York "To John Targé Dr To Services don[e] as Land and Tide Wa[i]ter" recording ten ships inspected by Targé, noting their name, master's name and port of origin including London, "Cayanne", Jamaica, Philadelphia, and others. Lamb adds his endorsement below that of surveyor John Lasher: "I do Certify that to the best of my knowledge & belief) the above account is just John Lamb Collector.” Light toning and partial separations (some reinforced with glassine on verso) along usual folds, else very good to fine condition.
