ENTERTAINING ANECDOTES OF WASHINGTON, EXHIBITING HIS PATRIOTISM, COURAGE, BENEVOLENCE AND PEITY, New Edition, Published by Otis Clapp, Boston, MA, 1846, 140 pages (lacking pages 97 to 112), 5.8" x 4.8," Fine. Hardbound cloth, with gilt-stamped cover and spine. Featuring a number of nice, handcolored woodblock prints as well as anecdotes and stories about George Washington. Signed on the front "presentation" page by a previous owner, "Julia Van Buren"--but we are not certain if she is related to former President Martin Van Buren. Toned pages with some smudges, printing is sharp and bright, as are the colorations to the woodblock prints. The binding is broken at the back of the book. A neat, early work that contains many anecdotes, including the legendary story about little George who supposedly chopped down his father's cherry tree: "I can't tell a lie, father; you know I can't tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet." His father allegedly responded: "I am glad you killed the cherry-tree, for by means of it I have discovered how much my boy regards the truth..."
