ADAMS, John Quincy (1767-1848) 6th President of the United States. Son of John Adams, 2nd President. U.S Senator, 1803-08, Chief Negotiator of Treaty of Ghent, 1814, Secretary of State to Monroe, 1817-25. Though he lost both the electoral and popular vote to Andrew Jackson in 1824, there were no majority winners and the election was given to the House of Representatives, who elected Adams on the first ballot with the barest majority. Autograph Note in the hand of John Q. Adams, 2p. folio, January 24, 1843, on congressional log sheet, with the log reading in part: “Feb. 3 Fillimore H.L. Ellsworth asking an appropriation to provide for captured Africans delivered to Liberia. Feby 6 E.H. White Memorial of Hope L & Co. by E.J. Forstall. 2 Underwood Memorial of the Colonization Society.” Under the REMARKS portion, is penned in Adams hand, “1843 24 January Tuesday Present Adams, Granger, Shepard, Stuart, Caruthers, Meriweather. Chairman directed to report to the house the Bills read by him for establishing relations between the United States and the Sandwich Islands and also with the Chinese Empire. Mr. Granger reports unfavourably on the memorial of Commodore Ridgely and that he has leave to withdraw his memorial...” Fine. This was written two years after Adams defending the slaves in the Amistad case.
