Complicated yet descriptive print, 17-1/4”x15”, with President Jackson and generals in uniform, in front of the ships Constitution and New Orleans standing across from individuals representing the French government on either side of an abbreviated Atlantic Ocean. Jackson, a list of his military accomplishments at his feet, is holding the "Treaty of July 4th 1831" by which the question of claims arising from the Louisiana Purchase agreement and various discriminating duties on both sides was supposedly settled. The French agreed to pay 25 million francs to satisfy various claims of American citizens; the United States agreed to pay a million and a half of francs to satisfy certain claims of the French government and some citizens. Also punishing duties on both sides were to be reduced, and France was to be granted favored nation status, thus abandoning their old claims under the eight article of the treaty of cessation of Louisiana. But the French Chamber of Deputies, in a most duplicitous manner, on April 18, 1834, declined to meet the monetary appropriations. The martial atmosphere depicted in this print reflected the enormous anti-French feeling of the United States at the time. Very fine condition. Framed.
