Autograph Letter Signed, “J.O. Stearns” 1p. quarto, with integral address leaf to Post Master Burk of Pennsylvania, November 3, 1840, it reads in part: “...I leave the crowded streets, but cannot give you in half an idea of the excitement there is at this time in our city [Philadelphia] - everyone trying to get something new from the returns that are coming in, but all too political crazy to retain what they hear and not pertending to believe what they do hear, let it come from friend or foe, and it is enough to craze any one to hear the boys crying Extra...At 4 o’clock the Whigs was all in Glee - now at 8 o’clock the Dems are up and the Whigs are down. I just lef the Democrat Head Quarters and your county came in 1004 Dem. I proposed 3 cheers for old Tiagu & will assure that we gave four her 3 Rousers. ...we are sure of the stateby something less than 1000, but both parties are afraid to bet on the state [Penn.] So you can judge what the anxiety is. Yesterday there was more money bet perhaps than ever before in one day in [Philadelphia]...Business matters out of the question till we know how the Keystone State has gone...” VG.
