War-date extract from letter by “C.S. Hamilton” Major General, 1pp. quarto, October 15, 1863 and reads in part “I have known Lt. J. Smith Brown of the 126th N.Y. Vols for many years. He was with me on the Peninsula in 1862. He is brave, and capable, of excellent habits and character, and I know of no young officers more deserving and worthy...” Fine condition. Charles Smith Hamilton (1822-1891) was a career United States Army officer who fought with distinction during the Mexican-American War. He also served as a Union Army general during the early part of the American Civil War.
