Lot of 3 items pertaining to General Zachary Taylor during his service in Mexico. Autograph Letter Signed "D. Butler", 2 pages, quarto, November 28, 1845, Little Rock, Arkansas to Zachary Taylor in Texas. It reads in part: "I am authorized and requested by Col. Wm. Wynn of Lafayette Co. Arkansas (formerly of Va.) to say to you that he has a horse of the best blood in the U.S. called 'Rocky Mountain' which he has for some time designed for presenting to you as a token of his esteem and respect for you as a citizen and soldier...". Light aging, else VG condition...Plus; Autograph Letter Signed "I F Taylor", one page, octavo, February 12, 1847, Matamoros, Mexico to Zachary Taylor, Sautillo, Mexico. The letter reads in part: "I deem it my duty to make known the following information just received from a quarter entitled to credit...Genl Menion is to keep on the que vive until Santa Ana can reinforce him in person with a large force, when an effort would be made to drive the American Army from Saltillo & Monterey & should they succeed then Genl Urea with his entire force, including all the Rancheros that can be mustered, is to intercept the American Army & cut off their retreat to the Rio Grande." Fine condition...Plus; Manuscript document, BUENA VISTA, 4 pages, quarto, 1847, Lexington, Kentucky. Seeking a return of local war dead, it reads in part: "At a very large meeting of the citizens of Lexington and the County of Fayette...the following gentlemen were appointed to a committee to draft and report to this meeting resolutions suitable for the action of the Citizens of this City and County, viz, John C. Breckinridge, M.C. Johnson, R.A. Buckner, R. Wickliff, V. Edward Oldham, Walter Bullock, Geo. R. Trotter, Jams O. Harrison, Robt N. Wickliffe, E.A. Dudley, I.S. Hickman and Geo. R. Kinkead...The gallant deeds of our brave sons who shed their blood on the glorious battlefield of Buena Vista, have added additional lustre to the Kentucky character for courage and patriotism and it is just and proper that their dead bodies should not remain in a foreign country and in an enemy's soil, but that they should be removed to their native land and rest under the protection of their kindred and friends...". Small splits along folds and isolated stains. Fine condition.
