BUCHANAN, James (1791-1868) 15th President of the United States (1857-1861). Congressman (1821-31); Senator (1834-45); Secretary of State (1845-49). Elected President in 1856, amongst the growing crisis of slavery, his inactions led the country to Civil War. He was also the only President to remain a bachelor throughout his term. Partly-printed Document Signed, “James Buchanan” 1p. oblong double folio, January 18, 1861, being an appointment for Henry S. Miller of New York to be the consul to the Port of Hamburg. Countersigned by Jeremiah S. Black (1810-1883) who urged Buchanan to protect Federal property in the South, and ordered diplomats abroad to dissuade foreign governments from recognizing the Confederacy as an independent nation.
