Dixon” possibly James Dixon (1814-1873) U.S. Senatro from Connecticut, addressed “Dear Colonel”, 2p. 4”x5-1/2”, and reads “I wish to impress you with the reckless and disperate feeling which pervails in the Senate to day towards the President. I think the slightest spark would kindle the flames of impeachment. Only a pretext is wanting & I do hope the President will be careful & give none. Let things sleep a while with regard to Stanton till the feeling dies out. This is important. Please show this to the President..” Repaired, else VG...plus; Autograph Letter Signed, Joe Kose, 2p. octavo, April 29, 1868, with cover, intentially phoenticaly spelled, it reads in part: “...I write you these few lines to let tyou know as how myself and A.J. ‘our mutual firend” is both well, more especially A.J. who has been suffering from a violent attack of Impeachment - a disease which lately broke out at Washington, where A.J. now resides. The symptoms of this great disorder are very peculiar, it first shoes itself in the ‘Committee’ and attacks most every one in the house. This disease generally and finally locates itself...in that part of our system called the ‘Senate’ where it lingers for some time, and the doctors all say that if the ‘Senate’ be only kept free from inflamation both the Constitution and the patient will be presereved, unimpaired...” Fine.
