Tyler, John, Jr. (1819-1896). Son of President John Tyler, Private Secretary to the Confederate Secretary of War and post-war Republican. Autograph Letter Signed "John Tyler, Jr.", 2 pages, quarto, December 19, 1876, Washington, D.C. to President U.S. Grant, Washington, D.C. The letter includes a news clipping and seeks a position as U.S. District Judge in Florida. It reads in part as follows: "...In reference to the vacant Judgeship I am entirely conscious of the best fitness, and the best claims for the place , of any other Republican in the State, and rest in confidence on your friendship in the promise. Two university Law Degrees, ten years practice in Philadelphia, a practice for some time in this city, a practice for some time in Virginia, and a service with two Attorney Generals of the United States on appeal cases, ought in some degree to have prepared me for the post....I trust you may find leisure...to glance over, at an early moment, the accompanying communication on the passing political issue threatening Civil War...I look to yourself almost exclusively as the hope of the Nation...". Aging, VG condition.
