ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919) 26th President. Vice President under McKinley, he was sworn in after the latter’s death from wounds received at the hand of an assassin. Noted for his military service as a Rough Rider, he led the gallant charge up San Juan Hill.Autograph Letter Signed, “Theodore Roosevelt”, 1p. octavo, Oyster Bay, October 18, 1885, addressed to Major R.D. Jewett, it reads “If you were formerly a member of the 8th Dist. _[?] jsut write to the Hon. Jacob Herr, 23 West 23d, enclosing a letter from your former Dist. secretary as a credeintal; better still however, wait till the new enrollment next November (which will be advertised in the paper); then you and I will go round together and enroll.
