A 1800's photo of United States Cavalry in the Black Hills at Sturgis, South Dakota. No doubt this a very scarce if not rare early photo of US Cavalry in the Black Hills region. The US Cavalry Crossed Swords can be plainly seen on the soldiers campaign hats. The soldiers are in full uniform with cold weather clothing. Some soldiers are wearing leather gloves. The photo states "F. E. NICHOLS, PHOTOGRAPHER STURGIS S. D. TAKE THE B. & M. R. R. TO BLACK HILLS". The second man from the left in the center row is bundled in a fur jacket and fur hat that covers his ears. He may be a Buffalo hunter. The last man (left to right) in the center row is a civilian who appears to be very proud and may be the town Sheriff or other dignitary. The soldiers have one row of buttons that go down the middle of their uniform jackets except for two soldiers that have two rows of buttons. These two soldiers have a little different color of uniform and are possibly Cavalry officers. The soldiers are wearing boots with what appear to be leggings strapped around the upper portion of the boots. The photo is 10 x 8 inches in size and has a couple pin holes at the top above actual photo, a slight crease to the upper right corner and has some toning but overall looks nice.
