A May 31, 1865 document signed by Captain Jas C. Hunt, of the 1st U.S. Cavalry, being a power of attorney given to a D. Ramsay to collect the Captains Pay and Allowances for the month of May, 1865. What makes this very interesting and definitely more valuable is the document is also signed by the Notary Public, M. H. N. Kendig. In 1851, Kendig was in California during the Gold Rush, where he was one of the witnesses to a Treaty made and concluded at Camp LU-PI-YU-MA, at Clear Lake, California, August 20, 1851, between Redick McKee, Indian agent on the part of the U.S. Government and the Chiefs, Captains and head men of the Ca-La Na-Po, Ha-Bi-Na-Po, etc., tribes of Indians. The treaty was never ratified. He was a witness no doubt in his position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, since he made it back to D.C. and was, as the letterhead on the document states, an Attorney for Claims. The document states in part PUBLISHED BY M. H. N. KENDIG, ATTORNEY FOR CLAIMS, WASHINGTON D. C. KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS THAT I JAS C. HUNT CAPT., OF THE 1ST REGT OF VOL. CAV. HAVE MADE, CONSTITUTED, APPOINTED AND BY THESE PRESENTS DO MAKE, CONSTITUTE, AND APPOINT D. RAMSEY MY TRUE AND LAWFUL ATTORNEY TO COLLECT MY PAY AND ALLOWANCES FOR THE MONTH OF MAY, 1865………I HAVE HEREUNTO SET MY HAND AND SEAL, THIS 31ST DAY OF MAY, EIGHTEEN HUNDRED SIXTY FIVE, JAS C. HUNT, CAPT. 1ST U. S. CAVALRY, SUBSCRIBED AND ACKNOWLEDGED BEFORE ME, AT WASHINGTON DC M. H. N. KENDIG NOTORY PUBLIC". The document is about 8 x 12 inches in size and has normal folds and is in nice condition.
