Fine original imperial cabinet sized photograph of the "PETRIFIED FOREST, APACHE CO., ARIZONA" BY J.C. BURGE OF FLAGSTAFF. Image features scene in the Petrified Forest with man standing in foreground clad in buckskins and wearing a broad-brimmed hat and a bandanna. He holds a repeating rifle and is also bearing a revolver in holster and cartridge belt. Yellow mount measures 5" X 8," slight wear at corners. Image slightly faded but still strong, a few random ink marks. Verso features imprint "ARIZONA AND NEW MEXICO - SCENIC VIEWS, ANCIENT PUEBLOS, CLIFF DWELLINGS, POTTERY OF THE ANCIENTS, CACTUS, CANES, ETC.- ALSO PICTURES OF INDIANS FROM EVERY TRIBE IN THE SOUTH-WEST. - PHOTO. BY J.C. BURGE, FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA." Photographer J. C. BURGE worked the Northern part of the Arizona Territory beginning in the early 1880s operating in "Old Town" Flagstaff. Burge moved his gallery to Globe City in 1883 where he produced images of the area and scenes from the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Burge and a new partner, itinerant photographer James Hildreth from Utah, returned to Flagstaff, opening a gallery in "New Town" in June of 1884. Hildreth and Burge separated soon after, with Hildreth continuing as a traveling photographer, and Burge moving his operations to Kingman. Burge also formed a temporary partnership with the famed New Mexico Photographer BEN WITTICK. Burge and Wittick photographed the Hopi ("Moqui") snake dance and sold views of Arizona and New Mexico at a temporary gallery in Flagstaff in 1885. Burge moved on to the mining town of Kingston New Mexico in 1885, operating galleries in New Mexico and Texas over the next 12 years.
