TILGHMAN, WILLIAM M. "BILL" (1854 - 1924) Western lawman who served as City Marshall in Dodge City, deputy sheriff under Bat Masterson and later as a U.S. marshall teamed-up with Chris Madsen and Heck Thomas to pursue the Doolin Gang and bring law to the town of Perry. Rare partly-printed D.S. "Wm Tilghman" as Deputy U.S. Marshal, 1p. 4to., Guthrie, OK, Nov. 12, 1896, a voucher for expenses in the amount of $36.00 incurred during the period of Jan. 13-30 by a posse led by George Adams in pursuit of Jess Roper and other sought on a charge of robbery. Interestingly, the original complaint is noted as having been made by HENRY "HECK" THOMAS (1850-1912), a frontier lawman originally employed by "Hanging Judge" Parker. Thomas was a deadly lawman who, with Tilghman cleaned up "Hell's Half Acre", killed Bill Doolin, shot Ned Christie, and arrested over three hundred outlaws in a three year period. Boldly signed by Tilghman at top. Very good to fine.
