John L. Clem. First served with 22'nd Michigan Infantry as its mascot, then officially enlisting May, 1863 he served at Battle of Chickamauga where he killed a Confederate colonel with a sawed-off, kid-sized musket. Promoted to Sgt. for the deed, he was widely reported in "Harper's Weekly." Briefly imprisoned when captured later, he also served with the staff of Gen'l George Thomas in the Atlanta campaign. Single page (8 x 10) letter on printed stationery CONSTRUCTING QUARTERMASTER'S OFFICE ATLANTA…CAPT. JOHN L. CLEM A.Q.M., U.S.A." written in a bold, neatly penned hand Jan. 12, 1894 to Albee thanking him for his "pretty [Winchester] calendar…" with personal notations about their health, etc. Fine, large autograph signature. Clem retired as Brig. Gen'l 1915 and Brevetted Major Gen'l after long career mostly in the Q.M. Corps. Exc. With a copy of bio sketch, his Civil War service, illustrated with photo of him as a 12 year old drummer boy in uniform !
