A remarkable letter entirely in the hand of Henry Lawton with his usual signature "Lawton" from Fort Stanton, New Mexico, Dec. 9, 1883 to George Albee who had just visited Lawton and Mackenzie at that post: "Yes, the general talked a great deal about you after you went away, but I have never heard him say a single unkind word of you. He seemed to think you took a great deal of pleasure in worrying him, but thought it was your natural disposition to do so…I am afraid his health is breaking down and I would not be surprised at any time to hear of his serious illness. He is strangely threatened with paralysis or apoplexy, and just before he left Santa Fe he had a slight stroke. I was with him in his office when he tried to say something to me and for a long time he could not speak. He was much frightened and I was myself. It was very distressing to see him. He was quite ill afterward and confined to his bed. He may have a recurrence at any time much worse. Do not mention this as I think he does not wish it known. I'll write you a long letter in a day or so…and propose some plans for my promotion…I shall go into the matter in earnest and use every bit of influence I can get. I know I can count on you for anything…I like it here and don't care much whether I go with the General again or not…" Talks more about how to use political influence from his home state to get the promotion "…I have many friends left there who I know will put themselves out of the way to help me." Exc. Minor short tear along margin on edge of fold.
