…If Captain Albee presents this, tell him all the bad you know of me, you won't surprise him, but assist him for the sake of old times when we used to eat onions and bread and butter on [your] front steps…so many years ago…so writes Lawton in an especially neat hand (with full signature) on single page letter from Fort Stanton, New Mexico Jan. 16, 1884 to a Mrs. Bass. This letter sent to Albee to use as an introduction when he visited that woman (in Indiana) to help lobby politicians there to work for the promotion of Henry Lawton through political channels. He writes: "it will surprise you…I know I do not deserve consideration and that is the best reason I have for believing you will show it to me… [ mentioning that Albee] "…will visit Ft. Wayne in my interest…" Exc. +.
