Lengthy 5 page (each on a separate sheet) letter from Richmond, Va March 16, 1893 to George Albee.to Albee at Winchester Arms Co. New Haven responding to something Albee wrote about Berdan's outfit and that popular book. Says he saw Albee's picture in that book and takes exception to that work's specific mention of what "…is probable the 1'st Company of Richmond Howitzers commanded by my brother [which] was the only Company of that name closely engaged on that day, and this is what happened:" proceeds at great length to give specific details of the engagement, taking to task the book's author. Mentions he was not a member of that outfit, but was in that same engagement "…being in the 2'nd Company [Richmond] Howitzers" and is well-informed as to what his brother's outfit did. He hopes that "…if another edition is ever printed the author should correct his statements as they relate to the Richmond Howitzers…no battery of that name, and there were three…was ever driven from any position which they once took, from the beginning of the war to the end…if you know the author tell him for me, and I can give him abundant proofs, that his statements concerning the [outfit] at Malvern Hill are all wrong." …And much more, writing that he expects to have a pamphlet published in time for the monument being unveiled for that outfit. Penned signature of "Carlton McCarthy. ACCOMPANIED BY second letter by McCarthy; single page; March 16, 1893 to Albee thanking him "…for the handsome calendar of the Winchester Arms Mfg. Company" and writing that he is "…in possession of information which demonstrates that the battery to which you refer at Malvern Hill as being so badly used up [and as mentioned in Berdan book]…never left the field until they had fired their last round of ammunition…" and more details. Both letters…
