Lengthy 4 page letter by Henry Lawton to George Albee, May 14, 1898. Entirely in his hand with usual bold signature. On fancy illustrated letterhead of "The New Southern Hotel / Chattanooga, Tenn." with illustration of hotel. Thanks him "…for what I know you did toward securing my appointment as Brig. General. I am sure your good offices help me. …I am now here awaiting the arrival of the volunteers. I was before with Shafter's command, organized as the first column to go to Cuba, but was most unceremoniously ordered here against Shafter's emphatic protest. It has broken me all up. I had worked night and day to help organize the outfit and certainly believed I would go with it. …I ought to be satisfied and contented, but I am not. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am that you did not get your Regiment of SHARP SHOOTERS. Besides my desire to have you get the head of a regiment and have you with me…a regiment such as you proposed would have been worth its weight in gold. It would have been worth a division of ordinary soldiers." Also writes how much he would have liked to have seen Albee get the active duty commission he wanted and writes of the various reasons why he did not. "…Regret that we seem to have so much friction in Washington and so many changes of plans [and inability to] dignify anything that has been done by calling it a plan or policy." Exc.
