Writes Gen'l William Shafter to his friend Albee, March 18, 1901 from his newest station as commanding general on the West Coast supervising troops on their way to quell the Philippine Insurrection. Two page (each blank on reverse) typed letter on printed letterhead "Hdqtrs. Dept. of California / Office of the Commanding General / San Francisco…" Also writes: "…I feel I have been fully vindicated by the action of Congress in giving me advanced rank to retire on and I assure you that I am well satisfied, though my friends think I ought to have more." Writes about coming retirement: "General Young has left Manila for San Francisco and will relieve me…not until June, perhaps before. I can't say as I care very much one way or the other…getting affairs in shape to go down to the ranch and enjoy myself…" Exc. +. The general obviously savoring his successful vindication from the controversy with the Navy brass over the Santiago engagement and their discomfort.
