War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "In camp 7 milks below Green Pond, Easter Sunday, April 5, 1863," to his mother & sisters, in part: "…Frank is still improving. His mother came to Green Pond to see him…& returned to the train from Charleston…I am sorry that you did not get Mrs. Raymond's boy. I am compelled to have Simon. You must have a servant if it cost $500 a year. A trusty, faithful one is needed. It may be impossible for you to get such a one. I shall see Mrs. Raymond when I go to town. You are doubtless…excited about the contemplated attack of the enemy of Charleston…I am much annoyed by the carelessness of the railroad in not forwarding the grain I shipped…the bushel of grist is spoiled…get Dr. Bivings to buy some corn for them…I fear you are suffering from what of provisions…the planters down here are preparing to plant all the cotton the laws allow…if they don't plant three acres…our country will be ruined for the families of the soldier must starve...I will come up soon as this excitement is over…A. B. Mulligan." VG.
