Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Murfreesboro Tenn., March 8 , 1863, 2pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “On last Monday my bed fellow was taken sick and sent to the hospital ... He lay in the hospital for four days, three unconcious in which state he was removed from our hospital tent to Hospital#8 in Murfreesboro where he died within twelve hours after he arrived. ... His disease was ‘camp fever’ brought on by lying on the damp ground ... He died as he lived a very careless member of the Methodist Church. Frequently I told him the evil he was exerting in playing cards, but he would say it was no harm to play for fun. ... we can put down this rebellion and restore peace to our borders & happiness to our land. We cannot ever compromise ..”
