Partly-printed Document Signed, W.H. Carrington", 2p. 5-¾"x4", being a pass to be used on "TURNPIKE AND OTHER ROADS" issued by the "Confederate States of America, War Department, Richmond, July 20, 1864", for a slave named Burnwell who is to visit Charles City "upon honor not to communicate in writing or verbally, for publication, any fact ascertained, which, if known to the enemy, might be injurious to the Confederate States of America…" Burnwell is described as being 22 years old, 5'8", with black eyes, hair and complexion. Oath to "bear true faith and yield obedience to the Confederate States of America" on verso. Pencil notation beneath states it was found by Captain Henry Duval, summer 1864. VG. CARRINGTON, Isaac Howell (1827-1887) Chief of Staff to Gen. Floyd, 1862-1863. Commissioner in Richmond, appointed July 1863. Served in Provost Marshal's office in Richmond, March 1864 until the end of the war. Appointed Superintendent for raising black troops late in the war. Participated in efforts to spirit away the Confederate Treasury.
