TAPPAN, James Camp (1825-1906) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 32nd speaker of the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1897 to 1899. A member of the Democratic Party, he was a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives from Phillips County (1850-1852 and 1893-1897). He also served as a senior officer of the Confederate States Army in the Western and Trans-Mississippi theaters of the American Civil War.Autograph Letter Signed "J.C. Tappan" 1pp. octavo, on his letterhead, Helena, Arkansas, April 29, 1881, and reads in part: "...Your favor received Genl Cleburne left no family, his law partner...lives here & could probably give you any information you might desire. Genl. Hindman's oldest son is a cadet at West Point..." Very good condition.
